Good news & bad news

First the good:
The book that I’m going to be in (book “Urban Paper” from Matt Hawkins) is printed: one of these days I will get my copy!!!!
I’ve written about it here and
here.

And this is the front:

And this the back:

You ca order it at Amazon: Urban-Paper-Designer-Toys.

And when you watch the video, wait till the last page:

it’s me with Son of a Grumm

then the bad:
I broke my wrist and can’t type very fast with one hand.
So I will be posting infrequently for about 5/8 weeks.
And the subjects will be short….

Methuup da Funky One, a member of NPT has created a custom in an way that I forgot about:

print the blank Grumm template

print a pattern on the other side of the paper

and build your one-of-a-kind Grumm

So here the example of Methuup:

Read more at NPT: Dizzzy Grumm Custom and Oppp-art Grumm Custom

Tips from Methuup himself:

Use Google and search for images with “Op-art” or “Optical-art”

I’ve done this also, but by printing the blank Grumm template on a comic or stationary paper.

The only sad thing is that there are no templates to download.

This is a short explanation about this model:

I’m working for a company named NOISE (http://www.makesomenoise.nl) and I wanted to make a Grumm to “explain” what I’m doing in my spare time.

Now I worked on the legs, feet, arms and hands.
I’m not happy with the hand yet, but that will improve.

I feel ashamed, and I should! This custom is laying around on my virtual desktop for a long time now.
And it’s really great!

I present: Little GrummerBoy a Grumm custom by Hardy

Little GrummerBoy by Hardy Zip size 2.8MB 1403

The .ZIP file contains a .PDF
(You can use freeware like FilZip or 7zip to extract a .ZIP-file and read a .PDF with Acrobat or Foxit)

So lets start introducing: Hardy a German graphic designer and allround creative.
You can visit Hardy on his own blog: thepaperjam.de, it’s in German so not readable for everyone .
More into English? Perhaps you should visit him on myspace: Hardy has the most awesome myspace I have ever seen which is dedicated to his papertoy Bottecc.

You can download the Bottecc templates at the bottom of page, just search for “bottecc beta template”. (it’s a illustrator EPS, he should to change that to PDF… oh well!)

But that’s not all, Bottecc is a papertoy wrestler… Yes you heard it correct.. This papertoy can busta move:
Visit http://pwa.thepaperjam.de/?p=22 for the Bottecc movie.

As Hardy put it:

i started working on bottecc with the idea to make a papercraft that can really move and wrestle like the good old wwf-stars.

The subtitle of Hardy’s site is “Paper wrestling association“!
Too bad that the idea is not finished yet. I would love to send a Grumm into the ring
I don’t think there many papertoys out there that can beat Grumm

I have mentioned before that a friend of mine made a Grumm.

But for some reason I never made a download link… So this is a post about that: and some reminder for this Grumm.

Symen Veenstra aka Enkeling is a very talented illustrator and a good friend. We both went to the same art academy where we both studied graphic design …. (he is now an illustrator and I’m a Flash developer/designer )

He called this Grumm: Grummeling

Grummeling by Enkeling

Grummeling by Enkeling Zip size 1.1MB 1063

The .ZIP file contains a .PDF
(You can use freeware like FilZip or 7zip to extract a .ZIP-file and read a .PDF with Acrobat or Foxit)

When I started with Grumm I thought it would be cool to see all sides of Grumm and see the complete design. So I made a rotation viewer. But because it’s a lot of work creating a rotation I stopped doing that. Symen is the last one I made one for.

One of my inspiration to create Grumm was Sjors Trimbach with Brickboy. Back then I visited his site weekly and after a while I noticed that there were no more updates of new Brickboys.
Some time later I found Brickboys creations on sites of designers who had created a custom Brickboy. Sjors wrote about it (can’t find that article anymore) saying that he was too busy, and that designers started taking matter into there own hands, that the designers couldn’t wait any longer and publishing there own Brickboys on there own sites…. (if I remember the article correctly, Sjors didn’t mind…)

When I red this, I couldn’t image that happening to me…..
Well for everything there is a first time: I’m too busy, and don’t have enough time to put everything on my site and Eric Wiryanata’s took maters in his own hands.
Can’t blame him…

But it’s a nice version of Grumm and in time I will put him on my site:

Visit Zombie Grumm at Thunder Panda and there is a download link over there.

Another experiment towards Custmm Grumm. This time my task was to export/import an Illustrator file to Flash…

Yeah, yeah; I know: you say “import to stage” … correct!
But what I need is the shape converted to code (coordinates in the x-direction and y-direction)..
Ha, you stopped grinning!

Well the first part is correct.
You need to import the file to the stage and give every imported shape it’s own layer.
This is something that you don’t want to do by hand (I didn’t want to ), so I wrote a jsfl that fixes that for you (read my post about it here: object-to-layer-jsfl)

After that you need to extract the values (x and y-positions form the corners of the shapes) of the files. Some thing, you don’t want that to do by hand: I have written a jsfl who does that. (read more about that here: shape-2-array-jsfl )

If you use these two scripts, you get: all imported shapes in different layers, and you can extract all values.
Example of the array:
[as]
var shapeArrayz:Array = new Array ();
shapeArrayz[0] = [[20.05,169.5,0] , [62.425,169.5,1] , [104.8,169.5,2] , [104.8,169.5,0] , [104.8,211.85,1] , [104.8,254.2,2] , [104.8,254.2,0] , [62.425,254.2,1] , [20.05,254.2,2] , [20.05,254.2,0] , [20.05,211.85,1] , [20.05,169.5,2]];
// etc…
[/as]
This array off point can be used to generate the shape you just “traced”.

-

This script (below) is used to generate the points (every line has 3 points, the beginning, the end and one inbetween), and the generated shape on the right side (no points, only the shape):
[as]
var shapeArray:Array = [];

// visualize the points
function createPoints2 (_pointArray:Array) {
shapeArray = [];
var point:MovieClipInLibraryWithLinkageName;
for (var i=0; i<_pointArray.length; i++) {
point = new MovieClipInLibraryWithLinkageName();
point.x = _pointArray[i][0];
point.y = _pointArray[i][1];
var switchExpression:uint = _pointArray[i][2];
switch (switchExpression) {
case 0 :
//trace (0);
point.alpha = .5;
shapeArray.push ([_pointArray[i][0],_pointArray[i][1]]);
break;
case 1 :
//trace (1);
point.scaleX = point.scaleY = .5;
break;
case 2 :
//trace (2);
point.alpha = .5;
point.scaleX = point.scaleY = .3;
break;
default :
trace ("Not 0, 1, or 2");
}
addChild (point);
}

}

// draw the new extracted image
function drawArray (_arr:Array) {
// trace ("drawArray ");
var _shape:Shape = new Shape();
_shape.graphics.lineStyle (1, 0×333333, 1);
_shape.graphics.beginFill (0xcccccc);
_shape.graphics.moveTo (_arr[0][0], _arr[0][1]); // starting point
for (var i=1; i<=_arr.length; i+=3) {
_shape.graphics.curveTo (_arr[i][0], _arr[i][1] , _arr[i+1][0], _arr[i+1][1]);
// _shape.graphics.lineTo (_arr[i+1][0], _arr[i+1][1]);
}
_shape.graphics.endFill ();
this.drawContainer_mc.addChild (_shape);
}

// jumpstart everything
function init (){
for (var j=0; j<shapeArrayz.length; j++) {
// trace(shapeArrayz[j])
createPoints2 (shapeArrayz[j]);
drawArray (shapeArrayz[j]);
}
}
init ();

[/as]

Update #1: I previously used point_mc in the code. That was a movieClip in the library with a linkage name. I changed it in the code, I hope that helps.

Eventually I will use the points, and generated shapes to modify the shape (move a point, create a new shape) and/or to add points.
